What can be referred to as 'advanced bionics' includes robotic prosthesis as well as active implants that connect to the peripheral nervous system by inserting and extracting electrical signals. As the photos indicate, the idea is to compensate for lost limbs, although, the mechanics of interfacing and operating active implants are invasive and far from straight forward.
As we see from these videos, the technology is still experimental and very cumbersome, but any success clearly gives people hope, in particular, that the future will see more flexible and easy-to-manage bionics.
At the same time, experiements have been undertaken to connect with the nervous system for the purposes of creating novel experiences and to speculate on human enhancement and what the implications of that might be. Kevin Warwick is best known for self-experimentation in this area.
