The Turk, built by von Kempelen, was also a make-believe and an elaborate hoax. The cupboard underneath the chessboard could hide inside it a human playing on a separate board against the opponent to the Turk. The chess player in the cupboard could control the arms of the Turk to move the chess pieces on the surface. The Turk travelled as a show piece for over 50 years before the hoax was explained.
