The African Jungle
One Sunny morning leo the lion was thinking. He was thinking of the jungle to make it nicer. Hello leo! replied Hisser, what are you doing today"? Well I want to change the jungle, to make it nicer. I don't want you to" said Hisser, I like it as it is she said. I am the King said leo <reg>angrily</reg>. Nila, <reg>leo's</reg> wife came back from the jungles in north Africa. The pack of monkeys up a tree from leo, were very very glad to see Nila. Hi said Fred, one two three said Nila <reg>happily</reg>. Boo! Said Nila. You are back Said leo "I am really glad to see you"! Fred was one of the monkeys. He had 4 <reg>baby</reg>monkeys Which were called flopsey, mopsey, Dopey and laura. Oh no! Said leo the jaguars are coming go! Fred and his wife Started to hear a thump, Thump, thump. What on earth is that said <reg>lasher</reg>, <reg>fred's</reg> wife. <reg>fred</reg> said, I hate to tell you this but <reg>it's</reg> the jaguars coming. All of the animals got into their homes so they would not get killed. After the jaguars had gone the animals came out. Croco the crocodile just had a bath in the pond <reg>nearby</reg>. He lived in a hole by the pond with Snaper and his children. After two years Leo had a baby boy. He never knew what to call him. The Snakes and the monkeys decided to call him bill, but Leo, <reg>Nila</reg>, crocodiles and the tigers wanted to call him Simba. So Simba it was and the snakes and monkeys thought it is a lovely name for a lion. Simba was going to be king one day. Simba went out for a walk and he saw lots of monkeys he had never seen before. He heard a noise coming from behind him and scared him. It was a howler monkey. Hello said the

howler monkey, would you like to be my friend? Yes I would because I have not got any friends replied Simba. At night time Simba asked his dad <sic>howler</sic> the howler monkey could come round Leo said yes. But he wondered who howler was going to be big or small. Howler was <reg>Simba's</reg> age. But Simba could not marry howler because howler was a monkey and Simba <reg>wasn't</reg>. Shellare was <note desc="text added later by unknown hand at unknown date">going to be </note> Simba's wife but they are not married. Howler came round for tea and they had dead Zebras and hippos. After tea Simba said to howler, can I marry you? well howler said, I would love <reg>to</reg>. Simba told his mum and dad about howler and him, if they could get married. Leo said no and so did Nila. The monkeys have to marry each other and so do the lions said Leo. You are going to marry a lion called Shellare. I think you have to go howler, said Simba. will I see you again? cried Howler. As Simba walked away he was crying. Simba was going to meet Shellare today. So he went to meet her at Shellare's house. When they both met Simba thought Shellare was beautiful. Simba had to tell howler about him and Shellare getting married. Then after a <reg>few</reg> days they got married. And went to find a new home <sic>a</sic> Simba became King. Simba and Shellare had two babies. Hisser got married too.

zebras
The most obvious difference between zebras, horses and asses lies in the zebra's <reg>striped</reg> coat. Zebra live as long as horses, the record being 29 years. The zebra's chief predator is the lion.
Mountain Zebra, the smallest of the Species, live to the South and South-west of the range of Burchell's Zebra.
Grevy's Zebra, in Somalia, <reg>eastern</reg> Ethiopia and northern Kenya, is the tallest zebra, standing 135cm at the shoulder.
Burchell's Zebra, are the most common. They range between Zululand and Namibia in the South to Somalia and Sudan in the north.

<reg>Zebras rely on keen eyesight, a good sense of smell and fleetness of foot to escape from danger. Though they are often referred to as horses with stripes, Zebras, with their long ears and short stiff manes, are more like asses. Normally they are peaceful animals, but they do have a vicious kick.

Giraffes
The giraffe is the world's tallest animal. <sic>An</sic> bull may measure 5.5 metres to the top of its head, although females are smaller. Giraffes live in the <reg>Savannah</reg> of Africa South of the Sahara, but populations have been greatly reduced and the animal was once much more widespread. The long neck allows the animals to browse on high foliage and to watch out for <reg>enemies</reg>.
page 14 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ LK5.1 index ]
Giraffes have the same number of bones in their necks as humans, but they are more spread out. The giraffe's height enables it to watch for predators many kilometres away and several animals browsing together will usually face in different directions to keep a thorough lookout.
Giraffes are often seen with large crowds of antelopes and zebras, especially at water holes, for the greater the number of animals gathering together, the better their chances are of sensing danger. The giraffe's neck can reach 2m (6 ft) into the tree by standing on its hind legs, balancing against a branch with its front hooves and reaching up to the leaves <reg>with</reg> its long neck.
Giraffes are very tall and big. They are 4 times as big as humans. Giraffes can be 6 metres long and 2 metres wide, but they are 5 metres long most of the time. Adult giraffes do not sleep much and some zoologists say that they do not sleep at all. The giraffe has large eyes and a head which tapers to mobile, hairy lips. On the head, there are two to five bony knobs, covered with skin Giraffes have a few <reg>enemies</reg>. Giraffes live mainly in herds, moving around Slowly, unless alarmed

Lazy lions
A male lion seems to have a lazy life. He hardly ever joins in killing of his prey, but always has first pick of his meal. But even if he is the leader he too has to make some sacrifices. He must fight other males who want to take over his pride.
This gets more difficult as he gets older. Eventually he may be chased away or killed by a younger, strong lion.
<gap desc="imported material"> The lion is the largest carnivore of the African Savannah, feeding mainly on Zebra, Wildebeest, antelope and buffalo. A male can weigh 227 Kg (500 lb) and stand 1m (3 ft) at the shoulder. Lions live in groups, greeting one another by rubbing faces or licking one <reg>another's</reg> head and sleeping close together.

When water is <reg>scarce</reg>, the lion often lies in wait close to a waterhole, knowing that its prey will eventually come there to drink. The lions are dangerous. The males have hair round <reg>their</reg> face what you call a <reg>mane</reg>. The females <reg>don't</reg>.

The tiger is the largest member of the cat family. A tiger will prey on deer, antelopes, wild pig and smaller beasts like porcupines and monkeys.
Old or injured tigers seek easy prey, including humans. Male and female tigers meet only to mate. At seven months young tigers can hunt for themselves, but <reg>they</reg> stay with their mother.
