The Speaking and Writing Handbook

This joint presentation will introduce two publications of the INTO EUROPE series. The first part of the presentation deals with The Writing Handbook: the motivations, problems and their consequences for writing skills development and assessment are summarized. In addition to the brief presentation of the contents of the book, the issues that will be addressed are how the book has been used and can be used in writing skills development and assessment in a variety of settings such as secondary schools, language schools, universities and educational institutions. The second part of the presentation will introduce The Speaking Handbook, which discusses key features of good practice in oral assessment, illustrating various test formats and task types. After showing a brief overview of the contents, the presenter will highlight some key features of task design. Both bad and good tasks will be discussed and illustrated on DVD.
