Reading and Use of English, Listening

The talk will give background information to the Reading and Use of English, and the Listening practice books, the first and the last of four volumes in the INTO EUROPE series prepared by the British Council Hungary to help students prepare for modern European examinations based upon the Common European Framework of the Council of Europe.
It will describe the process by which the tasks included in the two books were developed (by experienced, professionally trained examiners), according to detailed guidelines produced by the English School-leaving Examinations Reform Project. It will present the range of testing techniques and task types included in the book, as well as the range of difficulty levels covered by the tasks.
The presenters will give advice on how secondary school teachers preparing their students for examinations of Reading, Use of English, and Listening can best make use of the books. It will exemplify different task types used in modern English language examinations, taking actual tasks from the books.
