CeMoRe Seminar with Kaya Barry from Deakin, AustraliaDate: 10 December 2013 Time: 4.30 to 6.00pm PLEASE NOTE NEW TIME Venue: Bowland North SR 23 Unpacking the material: packing a bag as a communal and collaborative experience The process of packing a bag is an everyday activity during travel where many actors, both human and non-human, need to be carefully negotiated to achieve the task. A range of material, spatial and inter-personal interactions unfold that can foster processual, collaborative and communal experiences. As it evolves into a daily practice, objects are often conceived no longer as singular forms, rather they are transformed into fluid and malleable material substances. During these rigorous moments of interaction, materiality is set into motion and is collaboratively negotiated. A range of theoretical propositions spanning a wide range of disciplines point to the ways that materiality needs to be reconceptualised no longer as singular forms situated within specific representations. In doing so, this offers ways to rethink boundaries and interactions, presenting affirmative, global, and nomadic encounters for a multitude of actors and situations. Drawing on interviews and photographic documentation of tourists staying in hostelling accommodation, I will discuss the potential of material practices that develop during transit, in order to reveal an array of affective, relational situations that hold potential for collaborative forms of experience. Kaya Barry is a PhD candidate at Deakin University in Melbourne, Australia. Her practice-led research project 'Creativity in-transit' focuses on material and spatial intersections with contemporary travel processes. Her academic and creative arts research involves site-specific interactions that engage with processes of perception and embodiment. She has exhibited her creative research artworks within Australia, Iceland and online, and teaches in the area of new media theory and practice. ktbarry 'at' deakin.edu.au Contact: Who can attend: Anyone
