This seminar addresses notions of higher education mobility and immobility, based on data gathered through photo essays by youth living in an upgraded informal settlement in South Africa.
Interpreting these essays through the lens of the capability approach, Mikateko Mathebula will deliberate on the interaction between the social and geographic dimensions of mobility, alongside the role that agency, aspirations and conversion factors play in this complex landscape. Findings offer important insights for the expansion of inclusive higher education recruitment policies and outreach initiatives.
This event is part of the Educational Research Seminar Series.
Seminar presenter
Dr Mikateko Mathebula is an Associate Professor at the Centre for Development Support, within the Higher Education and Human Development Research Programme, at the University of the Free State, South Africa.
