Double object nouns

The construction that places two nouns after a verb, as in the sentence “John gave Bill the ball”.  Verbs such as ‘give’ can appear in both the double object dative construction as in this example, and also in the prepositional dative construction as in “John gave the ball to Bill'”.  There is a class of verbs, however, such as ‘donate’ that can only appear in prepositional construction form as in “John donated a sum of money to the charity”.  Alternating between the two constructions is something that children have to learn, and in doing so generalize this alteration to verbs such as ‘donate’, thus producing grammatically incorrect sentences such as “John donated the charity a sum of money”. Eventually, they learn which verbs cannot occur in the double construction form.
