Originally devised by Mary Rothbart it aims to measuretemperament, with specific focus on characteristics such as activity level;disposition toward new experiences, including positive (e.g., excitement) ornegative (e.g., fear) displays; reactivity to new stimuli; and rate of calmingfrom strong emotion. The CBQ can be used, depending upon theparticular version selected, from infancy through age adulthood. In the earlyyears of life, the measure is completed by a parent or individual close to thechild, while later it can be completed by the participant him- or herself. Themeasure has demonstrated high levels of inter-rater, test-retest, and internalreliability, as well as construct and predictive validity. It has beentranslated into a number of languages, and some psychometric evidence of itsvalidity across cultures has been established.
