Originally used in grammar to classify nouns as feminine, masculine or neuter, it has also become a term to denote the social meanings of masculine and feminine. Thus, while sex is biological, gender is socially constructed or determined, and its meaning can change from place to place and over time. It has become an analytical tool for understanding social processes.
