Assesseschildren’s skills regarding the management of their own emotion and behavior, with emphasis on identifying children who exhibit less adaptive patterns. Children can be assessed by parents or teachers from ages 1.5 years through 18years, with separate versions for preschool- and school-aged children. School-aged children can also evaluatethemselves. Specific foci spanning all age groups include internalizing andexternalizing behaviors, as well as stress-related problems. Items are writtenusing easy-to-read text and describe concrete behaviors that could be observedin homes as well as classrooms. The measure involves 10-15 minutes to complete. Cut-off scores afford the identification of children with high levels of one ormore categories of problem behaviors. Evidence supports the test-retest, inter-rater, and internal reliabilityof the measure during the childhood years, as well as the construct andconcurrent validity with other measures (see Achenbach, 2009). The CBCL for the childhood years can be followed by measures trackingbehavior of adults through age 59.
