Lancaster University’s Renewable Energy Group (LUREG) is an international leader in energy research and hydro turbines. This site relates to our work on Tidal Range, other sites have been developed for Wave power & Tidal Stream.
Tidal range requires a barrage or bund to separate a body of water from the sea. Water levels inside the impoundment can be controlled to develop a head of water. When released, this powers turbogenerators to produce electricity four times a day. To minimize environmental impact and support low level flood plains we concentrate on maintaining the full range of existing tides. We have shown that such schemes can maintain existing tide limits against sea level rises of two or three meters. We are also investigating the economics of tidal range in comparison to other forms of energy.
