PhD studentResearch Overview
I am an ESRC-funded doctoral candidate under the NWSSDTP Studentship award focusing on ‘the next phase of net gain.’ Holding a BA in Geography and MA in Environment and Development, my research interests concentrate on the financialisation of nature and market-based conservation mechanisms, particularly the use of biodiversity offsetting within the UK. My PhD explores how, with the upcoming Environment Bill and mandatory ‘net gain’, biodiversity offsetting could work on a national and compulsory basis. Using predominately qualitative techniques, I work with local councils to identify the characteristics for successful implementation, and question the socio-ecological impacts of numerically valuing nature.
