This seminar series explores the urgent question of what are we educating for through the education life cycle. In this seminar, we examine what are we educating for in primary education.
In this seminar, we examine what are we educating for in primary education by exploring the following questions:
1. What are we educating for in primary education? How does this relate to educational purposes in other stages of the education system?
2. Who should determine what we are educating for in primary education? What are the mechanisms through which this should be determined?
3. What roles should policy makers, practitioners and researchers have in shaping what we are educating for in primary education?
4. What are the current relationships between policy, practice and research in education and how might these be improved?

Please note that this is an in-person event only. Whilst it will not be possible to join the seminars virtually, after each seminar we will publish a reflective summary of the discussions that took place.
Speakers
University of Brighton
Dr Marlon Moncrieffe is an award-winning international researcher and author, and teacher-educator at the School of Education, University of Brighton. His book Decolonising the History Curriculum: Eurocentrism in Primary School Education is widely recognised in academia for its theoretical knowledge and evidenced-based research work in advancing teacher education. Prior to working in Higher Education, Dr Moncrieffe worked as a primary school teacher and Assistant Headteacher. (1999-2013).
Gorana Henry
University College London (IOE)
Gorana Henry leads the Primary PGCE Programme at UCL's Institute of Education. She is passionate about children's primary education. Prior to becoming a teacher educator, she was a successful primary school teacher, Lead Practitioner and Deputy Headteacher. She holds a National Professional Qualification in Senior Leadership and MA in Education. Her research interests focus on the role that communication plays in in teaching, learning and educational leadership.
Ofsted
Lee Owston is one of His Majesty’s Inspectors (HMI) and the acting National Director, Education. He oversees Ofsted’s inspection policy for early education, state-funded schools, non-association independent schools, unregistered schools, further education and skills, teacher development and Area SEND, including alternative provision. Lee is also responsible for Ofsted’s curriculum unit, leading the work to publish our subject research reports and associated inspector training.
