‘Transfer the Ink’ Art Exhibition in Lancaster

A group of people stood around listening to Zi Quan's talk about her exhibition. Around the room is pieces of artwork.

From 10 to 15 June 2024, Zi Quan's fine art exhibition ‘Transfer the Ink’ took place at The Storey in Lancaster. This exhibition was jointly sponsored by Lancaster University Confucius Institute and the Decolonisation Fund of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. It aims to explore the intersection of tradition and modernity, and the blending of past and future through the traditional art form of ink painting.

A highlight of the exhibition was a 20-meter-long scroll collectively created by 26 painting students under Zi's guidance. These enthusiasts, many of whom tried ink painting for the first time, expressed their unique interpretations of traditional Chinese landscape painting and modern art through their brushstrokes. Zi hopes that through this, more people, even those without an art background, can appreciate the charm of both traditional and contemporary arts.

Curated by Chiqian Huang, the exhibition attracted around 80 visitors. In addition to 20 recent works by Zi, the exhibition also featured a piece previously displayed at Light Up Lancaster 2023.

"Zi Quan’s exhibition is a stunning testament to the fluidity of cultural heritage and the transformative power of artistic expression. Through her innovative engagement project, Zi has beautifully bridged the past and the future, seamlessly transitioning from traditional to contemporary ink painting. The centerpiece of this exhibition, a magnificent 20-metre scroll created by 26 amateur artists under Zi's guidance, is a profound illustration of community and creativity. This collaborative masterpiece, the fruit of a 6-month project, reflects the rich tradition of ink painting while opening new horizons for contemporary interpretation. The Confucius Institute is honored to support Zi's visionary work, and we celebrate this exceptional contribution to cultural and artistic dialogue." - Professor Jinghan Zeng, Director of Lancaster University Confucius Institute.
