On 14th and 15th September 2023, the New Trends in Chinese as a Second Language Conference successfully took place at Lancaster University.

The conference was hosted by Lancaster University Confucius Institute and the Department of Linguistics and English Language at Lancaster University and co-organised by the Department of Languages and Cultures at Lancaster University, the School of Foreign Languages at South China University of Technology, the School of International Education at South China University of Technology and the Research Center for Foreign Linguistics and Applied Linguistics at Guangdong University of Foreign Studies.

The conference attracted Chinese second language acquisition researchers from China, the United Kingdom, Germany, Portugal and the United States.

Professor Edward Simpson, Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at Lancaster University delivered the opening speech. On behalf of Lancaster University, he welcomed Chinese language researchers from all over the world, thanked the internationally renowned experts and scholars for their support and wished the conference success.

The New Trends in Chinese Second Language Acquisition Conference welcomed keynote speakers Professor Xiaofei Lu from Pennsylvania State University who introduced the recent advances in L2 Chinese syntactic complexity research, Professor Clare Wright from Leeds University who discussed the influence of modern technology on Chinese second language learning and teaching, Professor Shaofeng Li from Florida State University who spoke about the timing of form-focused instruction in task-based language teaching and Dr Wei Yi from Beijing University who gave a meta-analysis on the processing advantage of multiword sequences during online tasks.

The speeches had profound theoretical significance, unique research perspectives and innovative research methods, which prompted enthusiastic questions and discussions from researchers and Chinese second language teachers.

Other researchers gave talks on new trends in Chinese second language perception and research, Chinese second language teaching methodology, international Chinese language education, British Chinese language teaching, Chinese second language tone learning and processing, Chinese second language vocabulary processing, modern educational technology, and Chinese language teaching development.

The conference led to fruitful discussions amongst researchers and Chinese second language teachers from around the world.
