The complete maps of novels such as Silas Marner are complex networks that correspond with Eliot’s metaphor for the world as ravelled “human lots […] woven and interwoven” in a “particular web” (Middlemarch, 126). In the maps topoi and toporefs, like Eliot’s characters, are threaded in a knotty crisscross, with key locations connected and interconnected: 'Marner's cottage', 'the Red House', 'the Stone pits'.
