Josef giving his talk

Final year MChem student Josef Stevenson-Hornby presented his research at the SCI Young Chemists' Panel Undergraduate Research Symposium on the 11th April 2025.

The SCI Young Chemists' Panel Undergraduate Research Symposium – hosted at Citylabs 1.0 in Manchester – is an annual conference aimed at showcasing the excellent research undertaken by undergraduate students from across UK institutions in the fields of chemical synthesis, methodology, catalysis, supramolecular chemistry, physical organic chemistry, medicinal chemistry and chemical biology. The event is typically also attended by a wide range of industrial companies and scientific employers, serving as an excellent networking opportunity for those selected to attend, with a dedicated careers fair taking place over the course of the day.

Josef’s talk – entitled “Alkene hydroamination using azoles” was one of eight selected to be presented at the conference. In addition to Josef’s slot, students from a range of other institutions also presented talks or otherwise delivered posters, with these sessions interspersed by panels chaired by a range of industrial professionals.

The conference boasted around 50 people in attendance, comprised of fellow students, academics, and industrialists. Additionally, a number of chemical corporations were also present, including Vertex Pharmaceuticals, Apex Molecular, Nxera Pharma, and agricultural technology specialists Syngenta.

On his successful presentation, Josef’s dissertation supervisor Dr Jamie Docherty commented: “A huge congratulations to our final year MChem student Josef Stevenson-Hornby for being selected to present his research at the SCI Young Chemists' Panel Undergraduate Research Symposium in Manchester. He delivered an excellent and highly professional talk - even drawing praise from the President of the Royal Society of Chemistry! A fantastic achievement and a proud moment for both him and the Department."
