CWD Director Professor Marco Wyss visited the Faculty of Military Science at Stellenbosch University in Saldanha, South Africa, on 2 and 3 March 2023.

Together with Dr Evert Kleynhans, Senior Lecturer in Military History at Stellenbosch, he ran a workshop on the ‘Alcora Exercise’. Alcora was a secret alliance of 1970-74 between the Portuguese, Rhodesians, and South Africans, who wanted to coordinate their efforts to protect their increasingly untenable positions in Southern Africa.

The workshop was organised to lay the foundation for a major international research project on the ‘Alcora Exercise’.

While in Saldanha, Professor Wyss also gave a lecture on the Cold War in the Global South to students, and had meetings to discuss future cooperation on teaching.
