Research Overview

Jiayi (Chia-Yi) earned an MA in Applied Linguistics and TESOL (Distinction) from Lancaster University, where she was supervised by Professor Patrick Rebuschat. Her MA dissertation investigated how individual differences in declarative memory interact with exposure conditions in a cross-situational statistical learning paradigm, contributing to the understanding of how cognitive resources shape implicit learning mechanisms.

As a PhD researcher, Jiayi focuses on the interface between implicit learning processes and individual variability in second language acquisition (SLA). Specifically, she explores how cognitive variables, such as memory systems and attentional control, modulate implicit learning trajectories across different instructional and input conditions. Situated within the broader multilingualism and individual differences research agenda, her current work examines how cognitive mechanisms underlying implicit learning contribute to variability in second and additional language acquisition. Her research aims to bridge process-oriented perspectives with learner variability frameworks to better understand the cognitive dynamics of L2 and multilingual learners.
