Academic Appeals
Students have the right to request a formal review of certain academic decisions through Lancaster University’s academic appeals process. This may include decisions about progression, resits, final awards, or degree classifications.
Appeals can only be submitted on specific grounds — for example, if there was a procedural error, evidence of unfair treatment, or extenuating circumstances that were not considered previously. Students cannot appeal simply because they disagree with a mark or outcome, as the process does not permit challenges to academic judgement.
The process is designed to be fair, transparent, and consistent, and all appeals are considered under the regulations set out in the Manual of Academic Regulations and Procedures (MARP).
The ASK (Advice, Support & Knowledge) student portal provides clear, step-by-step guidance on how to appeal. It includes information about deadlines, what to include in an appeal, and what kind of evidence is needed.
