Conference research presentations
A big thank you to all presenters for sharing your research with us at the conference. We are pleased that this year, the conference presenters, support teams and delegates come from all Lancaster Partners, both in the UK and across the world.
The research presentations are hosted on this bespoke conference presentation website. Each presenter has their own page, which can be viewed by clicking on the ‘presentations‘ section of this website. You can search by presenter name, by broad academic discipline, or simply view at random to discover the wide range of research work going on at Lancaster University.
We also have an MS Teams site, open for the week of the conference, which you can access from the red ‘go to conference’ button present on every page. Here you will be able to find links to the presentations and make contact with the presenters using the Teams ‘chat function’. We invite and encourage all conference delegates to join in conversations with the presenters in this way, to ask questions about the presentations and perhaps even start new research collaborations. This chat space should also provide a great opportunity for all presenters to talk about their research, and to get feedback on presentations which might help when it comes to writing research dissertations.
Please bear in mind when you post or respond to conversations in the chat that this conference is global, and open to all academic disciplines. Presenters and delegates may not be from your own discipline and English may not be their first language. All posts should therefore be clearly phrased so that they can be understandable to all, whatever the academic discipline or location.
Conference talks
The programme timetable provides an overview of the talks, which will be held each day. More detailed information and links to join the talks can be found on the Teams site for each day (press the big red ‘go to conference’ button).
The conference will start on Wednesday 10th March with the official opening by Professor Jane Taylor, and a welcome from Professor Andy Schofield, the Vice-Chancellor of Lancaster University. This will be followed by our conference keynote address by Professor Malcolm Joyce, from the Engineering department at Bailrigg campus. We hope all of you will join Professor Joyce as he sets the scene for the conference with his talk entitled ‘Research: Freedom, variety and fascination‘.
Each morning thereafter, the day will begin with talks by each of the eight 8 Lancaster University Partners. If you have ever wondered where our partners are, and what goes on at each of them, then join these sessions to find out.
On the final day of the conference the conference will be formally closed by Professor Simon Guy, who is our Pro-Vice-Chancellor Global (Digital, International, Sustainability, Development). Professor Guy will also be awarding prizes for the best conference research presentations. We will then have an informal session of virtual refreshments and a fun foodie quiz.
At the end of each talk there will be an opportunity to ask questions, and all talks will be recorded and posted on to the conference Teams site.
Please take a look at the programme timetable and the specific daily Teams channel for further details and instruction on how to join the conference talks. We look forward to seeing you there!
Spotlight on Presenters
On the Wednesday, Thursday and Friday mornings between 10 and 11am UK time, the student conference Advocate teams will host a ‘Question and Answer’ session with some of the presenters. This is a great opportunity to find out more about the presenter research, and ask questions. It is also an opportunity for presenters to get feedback on their research and webpage presentations, so please do come along and ask questions. This is a live session, with a different set of conference advocates and presenters each day.

Conference seminars
We will be hosting two conference seminars, on Monday 16th and Tues 17th March, between 10 and 11am UK time. These seminars are specially designed for you as undergraduates, to think about where next to go with your research and your future studies.
The first looks at the different ways of disseminating your research, to enhance networking and open up potential future avenues for your work and career. Presenting your work at University conferences such as ours is one way of sharing your research with others. In this seminar we will look in more depth at the other avenues, including publishing in peer review journals, using social media and presenting at national undergraduate conferences.
The second seminar considers life as a postgraduate student. As undergraduates you may be wondering what to do next, and perhaps thinking about further study as a postgraduate at Masters or PhD level. In this seminar we will look at options for postgraduate study and how to get there. The seminar is hosted by Jonny Parks from Student Recruitment at Bailrigg campus. Jonny will talking with a panel of current Lancaster University postgraduate researchers about what it is really like, and what inspired them to become a postgraduate. Please join us for the opportunity to find out more and ask questions to our expert panel of students and staff.
For a taster of life as a postgraduate, take a look at these inspiring postgraduate journeys, written by PhD researchers from the Lancaster Environment Centre in Bailrigg.

Conference scavenger hunt
Prizes to be won! The Scavenger hunt will take you through all the presentations in a fun way! Through the hunt you will be asked quiz style questions relating to the presentations, and in participating, find out about the enormous range of topics the students are presenting. For example, “Application of Critical nodes to valley glaciers”, “The Impact of Sound on Player Progression” through to “The effectiveness of the retail strategy in retail stores in Malaysia’’. The topic diversity is wide and varied, but what better way to learn a little about a lot in a short space of time – just for fun. Through the question and answer quiz we encourage you to experience the range of elements of the conference and for a lucky winner who get all the answers right, there are prizes to be won! Good luck.
Look at the Scavenger Hunt pages for details and the questions.
Conference presentation prizes
All our presenters are winners! The research presentations webpages will continue to be live online after the conference, hosted on the University Institute for Curriculum Enhancement webpage. This showcase of undergraduate presenters work will be open for all to admire – what a winner for your CV! In addition, all presenters and support team members will receive a certificate in recognition of their achievement.
On the last day of the conference there will be prizes awarded for the best research presentation webpages. These will be voted for by the teams of conference Advocates, who will have looked through them all and discussed between them which they feel stand out as being the best. Join us on the last day for the prize giving during the closing address by Professor Simon Guy.
Check the programme timetable for the conference closing and prizes award event.
Virtual refreshments & foody quiz
Our final event is the refreshment break and quiz. We hope you will join us for a light hearted food quiz as we celebrate the end of the 2021 UG Conference. Bring along something fun to share and discover who enjoys what refreshment at whatever time of day you are!
