With many unable to welcome live audiences, some theatres have turned to live-streaming productions via internet platforms. These developments seem the next logical step after almost a decade of companies such as NT Live broadcasting productions live to cinemas around the globe. However, as these cinema-streams fall between theatre and film studies, with the exception of some focus from Shakespeare Studies, they have received minimal critical attention. My own research aims to focus on live-to-cinema broadcast theatre through theoretic considerations of liveness, mediatization and my own interviews with key industry experts. I have found that much of the language used to analyse this hybrid form so far has been borrowed from television studies. This project aims to explore and arrive at a critical language that does justice to the complexities of this emerging form. In a time when it is becoming increasingly prevalent, I believe this study to be a vital investigation of the approaches that can and should be taken towards live broadcast theatre.
