Since its inception in 1965, the notorious Roses varsity tournament between Lancaster University and the University of York, is a highly anticipated annual event that brings together student-athletes to compete in a wide range of sports during more than 140 fixtures.
The rivalry between Lancaster and York adds excitement to the tournament, as teams vie for victory and bragging rights in this spirited competition. With a rich history and tradition of excellence, Roses is a highlight of the academic year for both universities and a celebration of the vibrant sporting culture on campus.

Intervarsity sport is the most competitive sporting offer at Lancaster University. The intervarsity sport clubs compete regularly, as teams or individuals, against rival UK universities to claim league, cup, and trophy titles. Typically, competition is hosted by British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) and most league and knockout fixtures occur on a Wednesday afternoon. Some sport takes place over an event weekend.
