No homework! These problems are just for practice!

  • 1.

    True or false?

    • (a)

      The integral 1f(x)𝑑x converges if and only if f(x)0 as x.

    • (b)

      If a vector-valued function 𝐟(x,y,z)=(f1,f2,f3) can be expressed as ϕ for some ϕ(x,y,z), then so can ((f1)x,(f2)y,(f3)z).

  • 2.

    A tetrahedron B has vertices (0,0,0), (6,0,0), (0,8,0) and (0,0,24).

    • (a)

      Check that (6,0,0), (0,8,0) and (0,0,24) lie on the plane that has equation

      z=24-4x-3y.
    • (b)

      Show that the intersection of B with the plane {(x,y,z):z=0} is given by the triangle

      R={(x,y):0x6;0y8-4x3}.
    • (c)

      Calculate the volume of B by finding Rz𝑑y𝑑x.

  • 3.

    Let y=f(x)=r2-x2, axa+h, be rotated about the x-axis. The surface obtained is a region of the sphere of radius r lying between two vertical and parallel planes. Find its surface area (using y=-xr2-x2).
