5.8 Notation for double integrals

We often shorten the notation by deleting the braces, so we write

cdabf(x,y)dxdy=cd{abf(x,y)dx}dy\int_{c}^{d}\int_{a}^{b}f(x,y)\,dxdy=\int_{c}^{d}\Bigl\{\int_{a}^{b}f(x,y)\,dx% \Bigr\}dy

where the inner variable of integration has limits on the inner integral symbol. We work from the inside outwards, observing that the limits aa and bb relate to the xx variable, where xx is integrated first.
