2.7 Parabolas

2.7.1 Example

The equation y2=xy^{2}=x defines a parabola. This curve is not the graph of a function of xx. Why not?

Solution. The value xx is associated with two values y=1y=1 and y=-1y=-1.

Not all curves are graphs of functions.

2.7.2 Example

The positive square root gives a function. Let the domain be A={x:x0}A=\{x\in{\mathbb{R}}:x\geq 0\} and the codomain be B={x:x0}B=\{x\in{\mathbb{R}}:x\geq 0\}, and take f:ABf:A\rightarrow B to be f(x)=x.f(x)=\sqrt{x}.
