Methodology

The emphasis of the project is on the "what, how and when" of people's everyday adaptation during the flood recovery process. Unlike large scale surveys or one of interviews, the project involves a tried and tested diary based methodology that was previously used by researchers at Lancaster to investigate peoples' recovery from the 2001 Foot and Mouth Disease disaster. In addition to undertaking initial in-depth interviews, a panel of 55 people will be recruited to keep diaries over a 12 to 18 month period. 5 to 10 of these will be made up of front-line workers. The panel will be brought together during the course of the project to discuss issues affecting the recovery process as they emerge during the research project. We will also undertake additional interviews to cover emerging issues throughout the project.
