Students rank Lancaster University one of the best places in the UK to study Geography and Environmental Science
One hundred percent of Physical Geography and Environmental Science students at Lancaster said they were satisfied overall with their course, the key question in the 2016 National Students Survey.
This means that the Lancaster Environment Centre tops the student league table for these subjects, coming first equal.
Amongst Human and Social Geography students, 97% said they were satisfied with their course, placing Lancaster 5th in the UK.
In all three subject areas students rated the courses as intellectually stimulating, with Biology and related sciences doing particularly well.
The National Student Survey is published every year and measures the satisfaction of students at Higher Education institutions across the UK. Final year students are asked about teaching, assessment and feedback, academic support, organisation and management, learning resources, personal development and overall satisfaction. More than 300,000 students from 155 institutions responded to the survey.
“Lovely” lecturers and dedicated students
“What I found about geography at Lancaster, which few other universities offered me, was the opportunity to study both human and physical geography alongside each other,” said Elenor Maloney, who has recently graduated with a Geography degree from Lancaster.“The lecturers are so lovely: they give you help if you need it.”
“These results demonstrate the high level of professionalism, commitment and enthusiasm toward our students by all staff in Lancaster Environment Centre,” said Professor Phil Barker, Director of the Lancaster Environment Centre.
“These latest fantastic results also reflect the dedication and commitment shown by our students, who contribute a great deal to creating a positive learning environment and who we all regard as key members of our academic community,” said Dr Nigel Watson, Associate Director (Undergraduate Teaching) at Lancaster Environment Centre.
National and international rankings success
This result comes in a year where Lancaster Environment Centre has done very well in the league tables. Geography and Environmental Studies at Lancaster was ranked 5th by the 2017 Guardian League table.
Internationally, the 2016 QS World University Rankings, which focus mainly on research quality and the overall reputation of a university, ranked Lancaster in the world top 50 for Geography, and in the world top 100 for Environmental Science.
Lancaster University as an institution scored 91% on the overall satisfaction question in the National Student Survey, placing it firmly amongst the top 10 UK universities, excluding small and specialist Higher Education institutions.
Lancaster is a top ten university
Lancaster University is now ranked amongst the top 10 universities in the UK, coming 9th in the Complete University Guide and 8th in the Guardian. The University also ranks amongst the UK top 5 for employment, according to the Daily Telegraph, with 97% of graduates employed or in further study within six months of graduation.
