We ask a few questions on the form to make sure the workshop is a good fit for the participants and to ensure we are able to prioritise historians and others in cognate fields.

Join the Data/Culture team and former members of Living with Machines for a hands-on workshop about digital research with:

• Maps: MapReader, a tool for searching the visual content of large map collections with computer vision and machine learning methods. We will focus on sample data from nineteenth-century Ordnance Survey maps of Britain.
• Newspapers: New resources for exploring and using open-access digitised newspaper collections in the UK (mostly also for the long nineteenth century)

We will review applications on a rolling basis, you will receive a confirmation of whether you are accepted or not by May 15 or asap if you apply after that date (until we close applications).

Bursaries: N8 CIR is supporting this event by providing bursaries for people who would otherwise not be able to attend. Please indicate your interest in the form below and we will get in touch with more details about how to apply for a bursary.

Please note:

• No prior experience with computational tools is required, however some familiarity with jupyter notebooks, Python, and digital map collections or newspapers will be handy. We recommend this introduction to jupyter notebooks: https://programminghistorian.org/en/lessons/jupyter-notebooks.
• Vegan and vegetarian lunch options will be provided both days.
• - We will ask for further details about dietary or accessibility requirements after we receive applications.
• This in-person only event is limited to 30 registered participants, so don’t delay signing up!
• We request that you take an at-home COVID-19 test prior to arriving.
